Big Springs PTA

It is important to always be educating our students about tobacco, alcohol, and drug safety. One week each year, we emphasize the importance of being drug free. This year we will celebrate Red Ribbon Week the week of October 19, 2009 to October 23, 2009. Big Springs Elementary’s theme for this year is “Join The Fight Against Drugs”.

There will be a poster contest and prizes will be drawn daily for students who turn in their signed pledges. The PTA also provided daily incentives for all students to remind them the importance of Red Ribbon Week. A schedule will be going home in Friday Folders soon, so students and parents will know activities we will be doing each day to celebrate Red Ribbon Week.

Todd McKinney is a motivational speaker and magician that will be coming to Big Springs Elementary on Friday, November 13, 2009. He will be giving a presentation to our students called Buddies Not Bullies. Todd came last year and spoke to our students about making the right choice during Red Ribbon Week.

The BSE PTA is sponsoring two Buddies Not Bullies assemblies. Todd will be presenting to Kindergarten through third grade from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and fourth grade through sixth grade from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. We would like for parents to join us at one or both of the assemblies to show our students support as we continue to raise awareness about bullying.

This program tackles the ultra hot topic of bullying, friendship and teamwork. Children need to understand and realize that verbal abuse is just as harmful as physical abuse and that the way we treat those around us is so important. This program offers several unique ways for finding great qualities in everyone we know.

Buddies Not Bullies is an inspirational program designed to motivate children to empathize with others. The presentation by Todd McKinney promises to engage children and teach them to treat everyone equally, regardless of their external condition. Please sign in at the office upon arrival.
